• 2-fer – A "two-for" is a type of promotion where discounts are given based on the number of items purchased.
  • 3-fer – This is another two-fer promotion.
  • 40-column – This is the smaller printer/invoice/report type, typically about four inches wide.
  • 80-column – This is the larger printer/invoice/report type, typically about eight and a half inches wide.
  • Backorder – A method of tracking inventory items that are not in stock, but requested/sold anyway.
  • Backup – A very important MicroBiz feature that can save your business! MicroBiz backups contain all of your product, customer, sales and other important data. See Chaper 18 - Maintenance for more details.
  • Bike-alog – A third-party database for the bike industry that can be imported and used alongside MicroBiz with the Bike Controller module.
  • BikeWin – The default folder name for local files using the Bike Controller module.
  • Bin label – Also known as "shelf tags," these can be printed from MicroBiz to help you track your inventory items by a section in your store, or to save from printing a barcode label for each inventory item.
  • BizWin – The default folder name for local files using the Standard Retail or Service modules.
  • Business – The default folder name that for system files that contains all of your "important" data such as customers, inventory, sales, purchase orders, etc. Only one computer (called the "Server") should have a Business folder, whereas all computers will have a local files folder (usually BizWin).
  • Cash Drawer –Optional hardware that can be controller by MicroBiz to be opened from within your system. There are two main types:
    • "Intelligent" - connects to the computer through your receipt printer (or a parallel port).
    • "Non-intelligent" - connects to the computer through a serial port.
  • Close Out – Procedure for periodically clearing the sales (usually performed at the end of each day or shift) from your system, used for tracking sales and accounting. Close Outs can be performed from each workstation (individual Close Out) or for everyone from one workstation (centralized Close Out), and as many times as desired. For more details see Chapter 5 - the Daily Menu.
  • Command Window – FoxPro command window for advanced users or MicroBiz Technical Support. Use of the command window is not required to perform any of the basic functions within your system, but is available if needed. Backups should be performed before running any commands, as it is easy to make mistakes and corrupt data here. Be careful!
  • Control Code – Used to tell MicroBiz how to communicate with specific printers or printer types. These can be configured under Management, Customize, Hardware Settings, Printers tab. See Chapter 3 - Customizing Your Software for a Control Code table.
  • Customer Lookup – Accessible from Customers, Add/Edit Customers. This window displays all customers in your system and gives you access to add new customer records, modify existing records, delete records, search for customers, etc.
  • Customization – A program or feature specifically designed for one user or organization. MicroBiz Customizations can be purchased from Sales at 800-929-8324.
  • Data Dictionary – Used with the Query feature for creating searches and reports, this utility helps you define the data that will be used for the Query. See Chapter 13 - Query Reports for more details.
  • DBF – Almost all data stored for MicroBiz is saved to DBF (database) files within the system files path (usually C:\Business) and the local files path (usually C:\BizWin).
  • Easy Business – The "Easy" controller is a version of MicroBiz that does not include the Accounts Receivable features of the "Plus" controller. For more details, see Chapter 10.
  • Enhancement Request – This is the free way to request changes or new features to MicroBiz. An Enhancement Request can be made by contacting MicroBiz Technical Support at 800-929-8324 (a support contract may be required).
  • Explode – From the Customer/Product Lookup windows, you can select a record and click on the "Explode" button to get a quick view of the details saved by your system.
  • Flex Decimal – This feature gives you the ability to change the decimal places used for cost/price/etc. within your system.
  • GL Merge – The General Ledger Merge tool is used to export records to a variety of third-party software.
  • Heading – The section of your invoice (receipts) that contains your company information such as company name, address & phone number.
  • How Heard – MicroBiz can store and track "How Heard Codes" for each of your customers and/or for each of your sales to assist you with finding out how your customers are finding out about you. See Chapter 8 - Customers for more details.
  • IIP – An "Invoice In Progress" is basically a saved and pending invoice (transaction). This can be used to come back to a sale that you aren't ready to complete. For more details, see Chapter 11 - Invoices in Progress.
  • Input Window – Also referred to as the "SKU box," this is accessed from the Front Register in the Top Center. You can enter or scan SKUs (barcodes), customer numbers and other data here to get work done.
  • Intelligent (cash drawer) – See "Cash Drawer."
  • Invoice – Also known as a "receipt," this is how sales are recorded and printed by MicroBiz. A variety of invoice types are available for different modules, see Chapter 15 - Invoices for more details.
  • Key Number – Also called "item number" or "line number," this is the numerical identifier for each line on your Front Register and is used when referring to items to be edited, deleted, etc. from the Front Register.
  • Keyblock – Also known as the "dongle," this is a piece of hardware that contains your system's registration (serial number, software versions available) information. This is attached to one of your workstations (usually the first one to run MicroBiz each day).
  • Kit – An inventory type used for grouping products together in a bundle, known as a "Kit," so the products can be sold together.
  • LabelWorks – Third-party software used for printing labels. Although MicroBiz can print barcodes without this software, using LabelWorks with MicroBiz gives you more features and flexibility with this. For more details, see Chapter 14 - Labels.
  • Layaway – Similar to an IIP, layaways allow you to save invoices to be completed later while requiring a deposit. See Chapter 11 for more details.
  • LiqWin – The default folder name for local files using the Liquor Controller module.
  • Local Files Path – This is the directory that contains your workstation-specific settings.  This is commonly set to C:\BizWin or C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroBiz\Bizwin
  • Manage Product Attributes – This menu gives you quick access to view, add, modify and delete your product categories such as: Color, Department, Size and Style.
  • Main Menu – One of the two most used screens in MicroBiz, the Main Menu (also known as the "Blue Screen") is displayed when nothing else is open on the current workstation. It gives you access to the full Menu bar with options such as Customers, Inventory, Reports, etc.
  • Matrix – An inventory type for products sold in a variety of colors and sized using the same SKU.
  • MicroTrak – This is an advanced tool that allows you to import product data into your system. It is most commonly used during a "physical inventory." This feature should only be used with the assistance of a MicroBiz Support Technician.
  • Module – There are many different types of MicroBiz installations available, each referred to as "modules." For more details, see Chapter 16 - Other Modules.
  • Non-Intelligent (cash drawer) – See "Cash Drawer."
  • PField – Several "Programmable Fields" are available in certain data records, such as the customer and product records. These can be used to store extra data and can be accessed using Queries. For more details on the PFields available, see the related chapters.
  • Post Screen – Accessed by entering "P" at the Front Register (without the quotes) and used for processing payments against a customer's house account. Available in the Business Controller Plus versions only.
  • Price Levels – MicroBiz can store and make use of several different prices for each item. For example, you can give a specific item a "Price Level A" price of $10.00 and a "Price Level B" price of $8.00," and the price that is loaded to the Front Register will depend on the corresponding Price Level assigned to the loaded customer.
  • Price Scheme – These are used to create customized promotions for your items based on a number of user-defined options. For more details, see Chapter 6 - Inventory.
  • Product Lookup – Accessible from Inventory, Add/Edit Inventory. This window displays all inventory records in your system and gives you access to add new records, modify existing records, delete records, search for products, etc.
  • Promos – Short for "promotions," these can be defined for your inventory items to help manage sales, etc. See Chapter 6 - Inventory for more details.
  • Query – An advanced search and reports tool that can be used to create your own reports within MicroBiz. An entire chapter is dedicated to Queries: Chapter 13 - Query Reports.
  • Quote – A Quote is similar to an IIP, but is not always intended to be completed and therefore does not "commit" the inventory items stored therein.
  • Recalc – Short for "recalculate or recalculation." There are several recalc routines available for MicroBiz in Tools Menu.  There are also transaction settings that allows for recalculation.
  • Receipt – See "Invoice."
  • Registration – All copies of MicroBiz must be registered, which means that a code from MicroBiz Technical Support is entered into your system. See Chapter 1 - Installing MicroBiz for more details.
  • Reindex/C&P – Short for "Reindex, Clean and Pack." This is a maintenance routine that MicroBiz can perform to ensure that your data is kept in order. See Chapter 18 - Maintenance for more details.
  • Security Level – There are one hundred "Security Levels" that can be defined and used for grouping your MicroBiz users to control who has access to what features within the system. The lower the number, the higher the access. For example, Security Level "00" has full access to every feature, which Security Level "99" can access only features that have no security restrictions at all.
  • Serial Number – Assigned to each Keyblock is a Serial Number, which can be considered your serial number for your MicroBiz system. This is used to help identify your system when calling MicroBiz Technical Support or accessing upgrades.
  • Server – The MicroBiz "Server" is the workstation that holds the System Files folder (usually C:\Business).
  • Shop Fee – A percentage fee that can be enabled on services or parts, usually only enabled by users of the Service modules. For more details, see Chapter 16 - Other Modules.
  • SKU – Short for "Stock Keeping Unit." This is the code used to identify each of your inventory items.
  • SKU Box – See "Input Window."
  • System Files Path – This is the directory that contains your global settings and data. It is defined under Management | Custom System Settings | File Data Path Settings. This is commonly set to C:\Business or C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroBiz\Business.
  • Trigger File – A file using the .mbz extension created to trigger certain program functions. There are some trigger files found in MicroBiz by default, and some may be created for you by MicroBiz Support if needed.
  • Type – For inventory items, the "Type" defines how the record should be stored and used. The types available include: product, service, kit, rental, etc. For more details, see Chapter 6 - Inventory.
  • Unit Record – Used by the Service modules, Unit Records are considered "child" records to the customer file. For example, an auto repair shop may use Unit Records for keeping track of service performed on cars (each Unit Record would represent one car). As another example, a shoe store might use Unit Records for keeping track of groups of customers (each customer could be the parent, and each Unit Record could represent a child and store info on birthdays, shoe size, etc.). For more details, see Chapter 16 - Other Modules.
  • WIP – A "Work In Progress" is identical to an IIP, but this term is used by the Service modules.
  • Front Register – The main place where you want to be! All sales are processed from the Front Register. See Chapter 5 - The Daily Menu for more details.
  • X-Charge – Credit Card Processing Software that integrates directly with MicroBiz.
  • Zap – To completely purge a record from MicroBiz.
